HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
During the past eight years, Six°North has been on a long, exciting and at times challenging journey. Supported throughout by our locals in the North East (especially Stonehaven), throughout Scotland, UK and overseas.
This short list below does not do justice to the time and painstaking effort that went in to creating such a lot in such a short space of time:
- Born in the old town of Stonehaven, next door to our longstanding brewery tap, The Marine Hotel, with an array of Belgian inspired beers (April 2013)
- Opened our 1st bar, Littlejohn Street, Aberdeen (June 2013)
- Moved to larger brewery premises in Laurencekirk, expanding capacity tenfold (October 2015)
- Opened our 2nd bar, Dumbarton Road, Partick (March 2016)
- Opened our 3rd bar, Howe Street, Edinburgh (August 2016)
- Opened our 4th bar, Union Street, Dundee (December 2018)
During our time thus far we have brewed countless beers reflecting our personal journey through the fast evolving beer world, opened bars to bring these directly to your doorstep with venues that reflected our style and ethos. This has only been possible with the team we built around Six°North, our customers, distributors and the many passionate brewers we have collaborated with over the years. It has been a blast, and it will continue to be.
I have always been driven to create opportunity for our team and facilitate the delivery of quality beer to as many supporters as is possible. I’ve also enjoyed opening the door to something slightly different, beers which are a bit more classical, whilst also evolving within our industry.
Covid has brought huge challenges for all in our sector, financial instability and emotional & organisational stress. For many this has prompted much sole searching and reflection. It has forced the question, what is really important?
Six°North is a business that has an international inspiration, but our heart belongs in the North East of Scotland. Our family, friends and the majority of our team are all here. What is important to me is that Six°North continues its journey without losing its soul, and continues to offer opportunity and reward to those that have been committed to our business over the last eight years. After over twelve months of reflection it’s obvious to me that the current business structure cannot deliver this.
To achieve this we must take a small step back, consolidate our business in the short term and be in as strong a position as possible as markets and opportunities open up again post-Covid.
We have made the difficult, and sometimes seemingly impossible decision, to refocus on our efforts and operations in the North East. This means we intend to build on what we have created in Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Laurencekirk and Dundee. It also means saying goodbye to Six°North Edinburgh and Six°North Glasgow. We have a great love for both of these venues, their brilliant customers, staff and communities surrounding them. They are more than just bars, and for that reason we want them to succeed with local operators who can be there every day giving you, our customers, the best experiences possible.
We have many beers yet to brew, many drinkers yet to meet and some wonderfully exciting opportunities to develop. We have an ability to create diverse products and services within the brewing, hospitality and tourism sector, but this will not be best realised for us by operating venues from afar.
Edinburgh unfortunately does not yet have new tenants. However, Dumbarton Road in Partick will soon bounce back into life with new key holders. The new operator will provide an exciting food offer, quality cocktails, spirits + wines and very important to us, they will offer six permanent lines of Six°North beer, continuing to feed the thirst built up over the past six years by you.
It is the end for our central belt venue adventure, we are not returning home with our tail between our legs, but proud of what we brought, when we brought it, the staff that helped us and the customers that came through the door. We will be forever grateful and honoured to have served these people and to have been part of their communities.
Six°North may be returning home, but we are very much looking forward to writing the next stage of our adventure and continuing to catch up with our friends further afield. We will continue to supply the whole of Scotland, UK and export markets through independent bottle shops, wholesale partners, larger retailers and a bar near you. All of this buoyed by our recent rebrand and can launch. The story continues…
Forever in your debt,
Robert Lindsay (Six°North)
